November is a time to give thanks, and I want to express my deepest gratitude to you for being part of the United Way of Salt Lake community. I am grateful to the thousands of volunteers, donors, and partners who are at the heart of the work we do. Here are three major highlights from recent work that has been accomplished thanks to your support:
- The ongoing federal government shutdown is now the longest in history, and 211 Utah has seen a 90% jump in daily interactions from pre-shutdown averages — that’s more than 1,000 Utahns reaching out for help every day. We’ve partnered with United Way of Northern Utah and United Way of Central & Southern Utah to support those impacted through the United Way 211 Emergency Relief Fund. Our goal is to raise $1 million to help ensure the basic needs of all Utahns are met as the shutdown continues.
- We mobilized national experts and local leaders to co-host a series of roundtable events in seven Utah communities. These roundtables will gather key stakeholders from across sectors to deepen understanding and harness momentum for how we can work together to improve outcomes for kids and strengthen families and communities.
- We celebrated the 20th anniversary of Women United with current and founding members at the Women United Annual Luncheon. This was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the impactful legacy of this dedicated group and plan for the future.

ADVOCACY UPDATE
Community-Based Partnerships Strengthen Outcomes
We’re excited to highlight a report released by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute that examines how community-based partnership initiatives improve outcomes and economic mobility for youth. The report’s primary finding is that aligning schools, families, and community organizations around shared cradle-to-career outcomes can improve education, health, and economic mobility. Strengthening community-based partnership initiatives is an investment not only in the individual youth who need our support, but in the future of our communities, our economy, and our state.
This report was presented last month to the Legislature during Interim Committee meetings. On November 19, the Legislature will have their final Interim Committee meetings of the year before convening for the 2026 General Session. You can find the agendas and follow the work of the committees here.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Kearns High School Latinos in Action Students Give Back
The Latinos in Action (LIA) program at Kearns High School empowers over 300 students each year to lead through service, community partnerships, and college and career readiness. As part of their community service, LIA students engage in regular reading and math tutoring with younger students at elementary and middle schools in the Kearns High feeder pattern. Over the past 15 years, the LIA students have completed over 152,000 service hours and achieved a 98% graduation rate for students who stay involved in the program.

PROGRAM UPDATE
The United Boardroom Empowers Tomorrow’s Leaders
United Way of Salt Lake celebrated the graduation of the first cohort of the United Boardroom. Twenty current and emerging leaders from across corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors completed this six-week workshop series to learn about nonprofit governance and gain skills that prepare them to serve on nonprofit and public sector boards and committees.
